Introduction to Application Layer

In previous, we covered the process of capturing Mirage Base Layer having OS & the standard applications installed within the base layer. Next step is to capture an application layer which you can use to install departmental applications along with base layer on to the endpoints. VMware Mirage Application layer helps you to deploy one or more applications to specific endpoints. You need a base layer along with app layer to push applications on the endpoint. You can provide sets of more specialized applications to specific users through app layers, independent of the core applications that are generally distributed with the common base layer.

Prerequisite

Install VMware Mirage Client on the desktop/laptop you want to use to capture App layer.

Capturing Application Layer

Login to the Mirage Console. Click on Common Wizards –> Capture App Layer

Select the Reference CVD from the list you want to use for capturing App Layer

Select the appropriate upload policy.

Choose the volume and click Next.

Click Next if you don’t see any compatibility issues.

Click Finish to activate the device.

The process will a pre-scan. Once the pre-scan step is completed, the client notifies you that you can install applications.

Install all of the applications required to be captured for the app layer on the reference machine. Includes application updates / Patches, and customizing global seĴings and configurations. Mirage does not capture any user profile specific application installations or configuration changes.

VMware Recommends avoid installing software updates/applications that you do not want to capture. Avoid any hardware changes, domain membership changes, and other configurations that are not required. Avoid GPO scripts running on the machine during the recording phase.

Post installation of required applications. Click on Finalize App Layer Capture

Name the new layer.

Conclusion

This concludes capturing App Layer which you can use along with Base Layer to provide an application on to Endpoint. Before jumping into the migration for a Windows 7 machine to Windows 10 I will be discussing the process to import USMT required to capture the user state at the time of migration. I hope this will be informative for you. Thanks for Reading!!. Be social and share if you find worth sharing it.
